About PNG to ICO Converter

ICO is the icon format used for favicons and Windows icons. A single ICO file can hold several sizes of the same picture, so the system or browser can pick the one that fits. This converter builds an ICO from your PNG with sizes 16, 32, 48, 64, 128 and 256 pixels, only including the sizes your image is big enough for, and it keeps transparency.

For the best result, start from a square PNG that is at least 256 pixels wide. Icons are square, so an image that is not square is centred, and the spare space stays transparent. If your PNG is smaller than 16 pixels, the ICO holds one icon at its own size. Small sizes are made by scaling your image down in steps, which keeps simple logos sharp, but fine detail will not survive at 16 pixels.

File names are kept with only the extension swapped, and no metadata or watermark is added. Everything runs in your browser, so your images are never uploaded.

Tip: save the result as favicon.ico in the root of your website. Many browsers, tools and feed readers still look for that file.

How to convert PNG to ICO

  1. Add your PNG images. You can select several at once.
  2. Check that the output format is ICO.
  3. Convert, then download the image, or one ZIP when you added several.

Frequently asked questions

Which sizes does the ICO contain?

The standard icon sizes 16, 32, 48, 64, 128 and 256 pixels, as far as your image is large enough. A 100-pixel image gets 16, 32, 48 and 64.

My image is not square. What happens?

It is centred on a square canvas and the spare space is transparent, so nothing is stretched. For the best icon, crop it to a square first.

Is transparency kept?

Yes. Transparent areas of your PNG stay transparent in every size.

Can I use the ICO as a favicon?

Yes. Name it favicon.ico and put it in the root of your site. Modern browsers also accept PNG and SVG icons, but favicon.ico is still widely requested.

Can I convert many PNG files at once?

Yes. Add them all, convert once and download a single ZIP. Only the extension changes. A file named logo.png becomes logo.ico.

Are my PNG files uploaded anywhere?

No. The conversion happens in your browser and the files never leave your device.
