About PNG to GIF Converter

GIF is an old format that is still asked for by some forums, email signatures, chat tools and older software. If a place only takes GIF, converting your PNG is the quick way in. Plain graphics, logos and icons with flat colours convert very cleanly.

The catch is colour. A GIF can hold at most 256 colours, and a PNG screenshot or photo can contain thousands, so gradients and photographs show visible steps, called banding. GIF can mark a pixel as fully transparent or fully solid, but it cannot do soft, semi-transparent edges, so smooth edges around transparent shapes look harder. For photographs, the GIF is usually larger than the PNG as well, because GIF compresses them poorly.

The result is a single still frame, not an animation. The pixel dimensions never change, each file keeps its name with only the extension swapped, and no metadata or watermark is added. Everything runs in your browser, so your images are never uploaded.

A GIF made here is a good fit for simple graphics: logos, icons, diagrams and flat illustrations with a handful of colours. It is a poor fit for photographs, gradients or anything with soft shadows, where the 256-colour limit shows. If you are not sure, convert one file first and look at it at full size before converting the rest.

Tip: use GIF only when you are asked for it. For the web, PNG or WebP keeps more colour at a similar or smaller size.

How to convert PNG to GIF

  1. Add your PNG images. You can select several at once.
  2. Check that the output format is GIF.
  3. Convert, then download the image, or one ZIP when you added several.

Frequently asked questions

Why does my GIF look grainy or banded?

GIF stores at most 256 colours. Photos and smooth gradients use far more, so the converter has to pick 256 and the in-between shades show as steps.

Will the GIF be animated?

No. The result is one still image. To make an animation you need an animation tool.

What happens to transparency?

If your image has clearly see-through areas, they stay transparent. GIF cannot do partly transparent pixels, so soft edges become hard. An image with only faint transparency is blended onto white instead.

Is the GIF smaller than the PNG?

For flat graphics and logos it can be. For photographs it is usually larger, because GIF compresses them poorly.

Can I convert many PNG files at once?

Yes. Add them all, convert once and download a single ZIP. Only the extension changes. A file named holiday.png becomes holiday.gif.

Are my PNG files uploaded anywhere?

No. The conversion happens in your browser and the files never leave your device.
