About Word & Character Counter
This word counter gives you the numbers writers, students, editors and marketers ask for: words, characters with and without spaces, sentences, paragraphs and lines, plus estimated reading and speaking time. The counts update on every keystroke.
Text is split with the browser's own Intl.Segmenter where it is available, so words and characters are counted the way people read them, including emoji, accented letters and languages without spaces between words. Older browsers fall back to a simpler rule.
The keyword list shows your most used words and how much of the text each one makes up. Set a character limit for an X post, an SMS, a meta description or a page title to see when you go over.
Everything is calculated in your browser. Your text is never sent anywhere or saved.
How to count words and characters
- Type or paste your text into the box. The counts update as you type.
- Choose a limit, such as X post or Meta description, to see how many characters you have left.
- Check the keyword list to see which words you repeat most.
Frequently asked questions
How does the word counter count words?
A word is a run of letters or numbers, and it can include an apostrophe, a hyphen or a dot inside it, so don't and 3.14 count as one word each. In browsers that support it, the counter uses the built-in Intl.Segmenter, which also finds word boundaries in languages written without spaces, such as Chinese and Japanese.
Are emoji and accented letters counted correctly?
Yes. Characters are counted as what you see on screen, not as code units, so an emoji, a flag or a letter with an accent is one character even when it is stored as several.
What is the difference between characters and characters without spaces?
Characters counts everything, including spaces, tabs and line breaks. Characters without spaces leaves out all white space, which is the figure some forms and word-count rules ask for.
How are reading and speaking time worked out?
Reading time assumes 238 words per minute and speaking time assumes 150 words per minute. They are averages, so treat them as a guide for a typical reader or speaker.
How do the character limits work?
Pick X post (280), SMS (160), Meta description (160), Page title (60) or your own number. The counter shows how many characters are left and turns red when you go over. It counts every character as one, so it can differ from the platform: X counts links as 23 characters and some emoji as 2, and an SMS with non-Latin letters or emoji is limited to 70 characters. Search engines cut meta descriptions by pixel width, so about 155 to 160 characters is a rule of thumb.
What is keyword density?
It is how often a word appears compared with the total number of words, shown as a percentage. Common words such as the and of are ignored by default so the list shows the words that matter. Untick the box to include them.
Is my text sent to a server?
No. Everything is counted in your browser and the text is never uploaded or stored. Only the chosen limit is kept in the page address.
